Professional Development for Staff
The School of Medicine offers a variety of professional development opportunities for staff.
The professional development activity must relate to a performance or career goal/objective as part of the employee’s individual development plan, support strategic goals of the department/division, and/or supports the strategic mission of the SOM.
Professional Development Awards
Employees attend course work/development activity, and submit their reimbursement request following successful completion of the activity.
These can be submitted via self service in Concur or via the Business Operations Service Link reimbursement page.
Examples of Approved Activities
- Classes
- Books that are required for classes
- Certificates and memberships, including position related requirements,
- Conferences.
Examples of Non-Approved Activities
- Books, magazines, and related subscriptions unless directly required for the professional development activity. These items may be purchased by department funds, if funding is available.
Some subscriptions may require an IT procurement approval depending on the subscription type. - Fees not directly related to course work. Examples of such fees include: facility fees, student health fees or other insurance, general student fees, degree fees, etc.
- The amount reimbursed will not include scholarships, VA benefits, federal grants and Pell grants. Employees may receive reimbursement for loans; however, employee must pay the loan first, prove that the loan was for the school tuition, and reimbursements are then made directly to employee.
- The cost of a course or other education involving sports, games, or hobbies unless the course has a reasonable relationship to our business, or is required as part of a degree program.
- The payment for or the provision of tools or supplies (other than books) which may be retained by the employee after completion of a course of instruction.
- The program does not allow employees to choose to receive cash or other benefits instead of educational assistance.

Professional Development Degree Program Application
This Qualtrics-based application should be used by eligible SOM staff employees who wish to apply for the professional development degree program. The programs provides $2,000 to successful applicants. Funding is limited.
Tuition Reimbursement Repayment Agreement
This form is to be used by all recipients of the Degree Program Award in June of every year.
Human Resources Certificate Programs
A variety of certificate programs and training are offered by campus training departments and coordinated through the Employee & Organizational Development department. Enrollment is offered through the UC Learning Center or through the host training organization. These programs include:
Management Skills Assessment Program (MSAP)
A long-standing UC management development program offering an intensive off-site assessment center experience for early career managers. The goal of MSAP is to address skill deficits and grow competencies that will prepare internal employees for future role opportunities in their UC workplaces.
Building Core Supervisory Competencies Program
This program emphasizes participation and practice of supervisory skills through the use of self-assessment inventories, case studies, homework assignments, and small group exercises.
People Management Certificate
The UC Systemwide People Management Series and Certificate is a program for all managers and aspiring managers. It consists of core and elective courses, which include local and systemwide programs and e-courses, as well as in-person learning experiences

Financial Analyst Bootcamp Certificate
